The Open Report, Week 5: Who’s In and Who’s Out
The Open begins in 2 days. Register here.
Over the last few weeks, we have been on a journey together, tracking the day-by-day numbers for the 2025 CrossFit Open registration period.
On February 27, the Open kicks off at CrossFit Mayhem with the announcement of 25.1.
Over the last few of these reports, we have touched on three of the four data points I have been tracking each day on Instagram (@known_knowable), which is a daily check-in from four different angles:
Counting up from Day 0 to the final day of the registration period.
Counting down from the first day of registration period to the final day.
Prize purse funding.
Total registration by Competitive Region.
We previously focused on counting up and down, then dove into the prize purse funding, and now we finish off the lead-up to 25.1 with competitive regions.
Before we jump in, here are the registration numbers for the past four years:
Year | Total | YoY Growth |
2020 | 239,106 | -33.02% |
2021 | 263,529 | 10.21% |
2022 | 293,805 | 11.49% |
2023 | 323,014 | 9.94% |
2024 | 343,496 | 6.34% |

Hiring a Nutrition Coach Made the Difference, Say Three CrossFit Athletes Who Lost 40, 70 and 80 Pounds
While some people can decide on a whim to completely overhaul the way they eat —cutting out their two-Coca-Colas-a-day habit and losing 100 pounds on their own and never looking back—that’s not the common story.
The more common story involves a journey of up-and-down success and struggle, a journey in which they continually find themselves back at the drawing board, trying to figure out how to create lasting healthy nutritional habits.
And for many who eventually find a lasting solution, their solution often looks similar – they realize they couldn’t do it alone.
Zoe’s Story
Any mother can relate to Zoe Seitz’s story.
She had three babies, one after another, and stopped focusing on her health and fitness.
Suddenly, she was 40 pounds heavier than she had been pre-motherhood.
After she was finished breastfeeding her third baby, it was time to get back in shape, Seitz told us, so she did what many CrossFit athletes do – she began tracking everything she ate on the MyFitnessPal app, which worked for a while.
Until it didn’t.

How to Watch CrossFit Open Announcement 25.1
The first live CrossFit Open announcement of the 2025 season is coming in hot on Thursday, February 27, on the official CrossFit YouTube channel. And we’ve got all the details you need to know heading into the event.
The details: The live Open announcement will kick off the 2025 CrossFit Games season, a season that’s likely to look different from any in CrossFit’s history. The live announcements started during the 2013 season and grew in size and popularity through 2018. CrossFit elected not to host live Open announcements during the 2019 and 2020 seasons but returned to host them again starting in 2021.
25.1 will be presented by Rogue Fitness, the Official Equipment Supplier of the CrossFit Games. The live announcement will take place in Cookeville, TN, at CrossFit Mayhem.
Mayhem athletes Roman Khrennikov and Austin Hatfield are on deck to throw down against one another as the first men to tackle 25.1.
This will be Khrennikov’s third live Open announcement (he was previously featured in 23.2 and 24.3), while it will be Hatfield’s first. The two men finished only seven points apart at the 2024 Games — Krennikov in ninth, Hatfield in 10th.
Haley Adams, another Mayhem athlete and fan favorite, will be the first to take on 25.1 for the women. This is her first live Open announcement.
