The Open Report, Week 3 — Counting Up and Down

POWERED BY:
Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up.
In today’s edition:
The Open Report is back for week three. Check out Known and Knowable’s Open registration insights and learn about the methodology behind tracking.
The deadlift is a simple but often unnecessarily over-complicated exercise. We demystify the lift below.
The 25.1 live announcement lineup was revealed earlier this week, and we learned that Haley Adams, Roman Khrennikov, and Austin Hatfield will throw down on February 27. We break it all down.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“I am fitter than I thought I was. I’m probably in some sense fitter than when I left the sport.” - Lucy Campbell, 2025 TYR WZA Women’s Elite Winner, reflecting on her win. An interview with the champ is coming tomorrow.

The Open Report, Week 3: Counting Up and Down
The Open begins in 16 days. Register here.
We are just two weeks away from the start of the 2025 CrossFit Open and more than halfway to the submission deadline for 25.1, on Monday, March 3.
That’s the date when we will have a complete picture of the total registrations for this year’s Open.
Before we get into what happens from here, a little housekeeping.
The daily CrossFit Open registration reporting has been running for 27 days, so it’s a good time to check in. I realized I never really went into what I’m sharing and what insights it brings.
The reporting I share each day on @known_knowable on Instagram is a check-in from four different angles:
Count up from Day 0 to the final day of the registration period.
Count down from the first day of the registration period to the final day.
Prize purse funding.
Total registration by Competitive Region.
Let’s focus today on “counting up” and “counting down.” I’ll address the other two after 25.1.

Demystifying the Deadlift: A CrossFitter's Guide to the 3 Varieties of Pulling Heavy
The deadlift is one of the most fundamental (and beneficial) exercises we can do.
It's also one of the most misunderstood, especially among newer CrossFitters.
At its core, a deadlift is simply the act of lifting a weight from the ground to a standing position.
But as with most things in fitness, the devil is in the details.
How you perform a deadlift drastically changes which muscles are being targeted and the overall difficulty of the lift. That's where the different deadlift variations come in.
By altering your stance, grip, or even the type of barbell you use, you can tailor the deadlift to your specific goals and needs. But to do that effectively, you need first to understand the key differences between these variations.
So let's break it down.

CrossFit Open Announcement 25.1: First Look and Predictions
Fans are in for an exciting first live 2025 CrossFit Open announcement, which will feature three athletes who finished in the top 10 at the 2024 CrossFit Games, including:
Haley Adams – Fifth place at the 2024 CrossFit Games.
Austin Hatfield – 10th at the 2024 CrossFit Games.
Roman Khrennikov – Ninth at the 2024 CrossFit Games.
All three athletes come from the Mayhem training camp. And while Hatfield and Adams are both live announcement rookies, Khrennikov competed previously at 23.2 and 24.3.
The announcement plans were shared with the public on Monday via Instagram.
Remind me: The CrossFit Open marks the start of the 2025 CrossFit Games season, which is shaping up to look quite different than in years past.
There is a new format to the season, along with both major and minor rulebook changes.
In the post, CrossFit revealed that the 25.1 Open announcement, presented by Rogue, will be hosted by CrossFit Mayhem in Cookeville, TN, on February 27 at 12:00 p.m. PT. The announcement will be streamed live on the CrossFit Games website and YouTube channel.
While the workout itself is still unknown, it’s been confirmed that there will be a repeat Open workout this year. We’re just not sure which week it will show up.
