What they’re saying:
At the end of the competition day on Thursday, CrossFit held a press conference hosted by Lauren Kalil. Here are a few sound bites you may have missed:
“This is a very different year, to last year, in terms of the test, in terms of the format; this time last year we were already two-thirds of the way through the competition, and were one day in.” - Lucy Campbell on managing expectations for the 2026 Games, given her stellar performance in 2025.
“Ricky is my buddy; we’re good friends. I’m friends with all the guys; we all get along great. I think in the heat of the moment, when your heart rate is at 200, and someone throws a towel at you, I thought it was very intentional; he claims that it wasn’t, I still think it was…it’s funny now that I look back at it…” - James Sprague on whether he had talked with with Ricky after the “towel incident.”
“I didn’t have a tremendous day yesterday, so as always I can look forward to upward trajectory and trying to just take a few more big swings this weekend.” - Pat Vellner on his expectations for the rest of his tenth and final Games appearance.

PROFILE
Maddie Sturt’s Career – Australian Vet Sits in Third after Opening Day at the CrossFit Games
"I can say now that I want to go to the CrossFit Games and I want to win."
Those are the words Maddie Sturt told The Morning Chalk Up a month ago. And on Day 1 in San Jose, CA, the now seven-time Games veteran looked like she could.
Sturt sits in third overall heading into Day 2, 13 points behind Lucy Campbell in second and 51 points behind the current leader, Aimee Cringle.
Sturt's 2026 Games Day 1
The 29-year-old from Melbourne, Australia, made a statement right from the start, coming out firing on all cylinders in the 2007 Hopper workout, which featured a 1,000-meter row followed by five rounds of 25 pull-ups and 7 push jerks.
Her time of 8:03 (official) bested all competitors, as she picked her first-ever Games event win.

MASTERS CROSSFIT GAMES
Masters Moment of the Day

Credit: Scott Freymond
While most of the crowd and the commentators focused on the battle between Noah Ohlsen, Scott Panchik, and Augustin Vilicnik, we clocked Marquan Jones quietly chipping away and then overtaking the leaders.
We snapped this shot as he crossed the finish line 10 seconds ahead of Vilicnik for the event win. Jones would go on to finish eighth overall in the men’s 35-39 division.
