Bring Back the Whiteboard – Why “Showing Up” Matters

Credit: @b.a.w_media / Instagram

We all know the type: staying up late to see the workout posted on Wodify, just to confirm that you'll skip another day with handstand push-ups and ring dips because you're so far from mastering those skills. Why bother showing up?

The issue is that if you keep skipping the things you struggle with, you'll always struggle with them.

The Good Old Days

Back in the day, around 2011, I would show up at the noon CrossFit class with a slightly queasy stomach, unsure of the “torture” I was about to endure for the next hour.

As I walked into the gym, I headed straight to the whiteboard to read the “workout of the day.” Then I looked at the scores from the classes before mine, with each name on the whiteboard accompanied by a time and an “Rx” next to those who were the “elite” of the group.

The Case for Flavonoids

A study that tracked 120,000 people for more than a decade found that those who ate a wide range of flavonoid-rich foods — mainly tea, apples, dark chocolate, and berries — cut their risk of all-cause mortality by 16%. The key is to aim for 500mg of flavonoids per day, or, as the study’s co-lead said, the equivalent of “two cups of tea.”

Alex Gazan’s Games Season in Jeopardy After Car Accident Leaves Her With Fractured Fibula

Credit: @alexgazan_ / Instagram

On Sunday, Alex Gazan was celebrating qualifying for her fourth CrossFit Games after winning the Northern California Classic In-Person Qualifying Event in Sacramento, CA.

On Tuesday, she was feeling lucky just to be alive and unsure whether she would be able to compete at the Games in August.

What Happened?

On June 10, Gazan and her husband were involved in a serious car accident during a road trip in California. Gazan sustained a small fracture in her fibula and wrote on Instagram that she is experiencing swelling in her leg and had “glass where glass should never be.”

  • “Hoping for a speedy recovery and getting back to doing what I love soon,” she added.

Whether her recovery will be swift enough for her to compete at the CrossFit Games in seven weeks and the World Fitness Project Tour Event II in 11 weeks remains uncertain, Gazan’s coach, Justin Cotler, told the Morning Chalk Up.

  • “Everything is in wait-and-see mode,” Cotler told the Morning Chalk Up. While he said Gazan would do everything she could to heal in time, he doesn’t want her to compete until she is 100%.
