Tia's Disappointing HYROX Weekend
Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up.
In today’s edition:
Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr withdraws from the HYROX World Championships.
“Extra services” aren’t the problem; unprofitable ones are.
The teen boys are all grown up — and they’re coming for the Games podium.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
After the first day, I knew I could train there.”

Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr Pulls Out of HYROX Championships Elite Doubles With Joanna Wietrzyk
Seven-time CrossFit Games champion Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr raced on Saturday at the 2025 HYROX World Championships in the Mixed Doubles alongside James Newbury but later pulled out of her planned race in the Women’s Pro Doubles Elite 15 with partner Joanna Wietrzyk.
While a specific reason wasn’t given, we were told by multiple sources that Toomey-Orr was dealing with an illness that caused her to withdraw. Click below to see how Tia performed with Newbury and how she could have fared with Wietrzyk if she were healthy enough to compete.

How Your CrossFit Affiliate’s “Extra Services” Might Be Killing Your Profits
Picture this: Your CrossFit affiliate is bleeding $25,000 a year on a service that "just makes sense" because your members asked for it.
Sound familiar? If so, you're not alone.
In a recent coaching conversation with Bob Gillingham from CrossFit Glen Burnie, we uncovered a problem that is quietly draining affiliate budgets nationwide — the dangerous assumption that member demand automatically equates to sound business sense.
Gillingham has been running his affiliate program for 12 years, generating $27,000 monthly with 170 members.
He's doing well, but like many successful affiliate owners, he was caught in a trap: providing free childcare that costs him $2,000 monthly because it "just made sense."
The reality?
Nothing about the numbers made sense at all.
CROSSFIT GAMES
From Teens to Titans: The Rise of CrossFit’s Next-Gen Men
In the early 2020s, a significant wave of young women transitioned from competing as teenagers at the CrossFit Games to competing as individuals.
Names like Emma Cary, Olivia Kerstetter, Emma Lawson, and Mal O’Brien all reached the Games in the Individuals category before they could legally purchase alcohol.
As individuals, these women have achieved multiple podium finishes, some quickly after they switched divisions.
The path, of course, was paved by Haley Adams, who finished second in 2016 and 2017 (14-15) and first in 2018 (16-17).
In 2019, Adams decided to go individual.
As the Games approached, there was conversation about whether she could compete with the “big girls.” She did, and then some, finishing in sixth place that year; she has yet to finish outside the top ten at the Games in her career.
Until recently, there was no real equivalent on the men’s side of the field.
