Does CrossFit Prepare You for HYROX?
Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up.
In today’s edition:
Why HYROX is a good expression of CrossFit training.
The science is clear — your gym friends could save your life.
Finnish veteran Jonne Koski is still chasing excellence after a decade at the top.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
For CrossFit athletes, this race feels like home. We are no strangers to the ski erg, rower, sleds, lunges, carries, or burpee broad jumps. And we invented the wall-ball shot.”

CrossFit HQ Gives HYROX a Nod – Here’s Why It Matters
CrossFitters, from everyday gym-goers to the elite (think Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr and Justin Medeiros), have begun to explore HYROX racing. However, until very recently, CrossFit as a brand hasn’t expressed its stance on the fitness race taking over the globe.
The short answer? It’s good for the brand.
At the end of April, CrossFit HQ posted a blog sharing insights on CrossFit and HYROX from the perspective of Stephane Rochet (CF-L3), CrossFit’s senior content writer and flowmaster on the CrossFit Seminar Staff. He explains what CrossFit is, how the sport differs from HYROX, and how CrossFit can complement HYROX training.
“My first thought is that comparing CrossFit and Hyrox is comparing apples to oranges. CrossFit is a comprehensive strength and conditioning program with a distinct methodology,” says Rochet.
He likens a HYROX race to doing a “chipper” in CrossFit and compares it to longer, more grueling hero workouts like “Murph,” “Clovis,” or “Glen.” Rochet doesn’t claim that HYROX lacks methodology but emphasizes that CrossFit’s methodology and definitions “describe who we are, what we do, and why we do it.”

How Your Gym Crew Shapes Your Health
In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General declared an epidemic of loneliness in America. This might seem strange in our hyper-connected digital world, but the science is clear: we're more isolated than ever.
What's even more alarming?
Research shows social isolation is worse for your health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
As someone who's spent years studying human performance and building health-focused communities, I've witnessed firsthand how the people around you can make or break your well-being.
PROFILE
Jonne Koski Brings a Decade of Experience to the WFP Stage
Jonne Koski traveled to Carson, CA, in 2014 to compete in his first CrossFit Games at 19 years old.
He had only been training in CrossFit for two years, and on the first day of competition, Koski recalls he was a bundle of nerves.
He watched videos of his role models, Jason Khalipa and Matt Chan, hoping he could one day compete at their level.
He had been training with his friends and fellow 2014 CrossFit Games rookies Lukas Hoberg and Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson. Collectively, they hoped they stood a chance against the best in the world.
That first year in Carson would set Koski on a path for the next decade of his life, including 10 CrossFit Games appearances from 2014 through 2023.
