2025 TYR Wodapalooza Day 3 — Lay of the Land
Weather always plays a key role in the annual TYR WZA story, and Friday morning dawned much colder than in recent years, with a chilly breeze and high humidity. The action on the floor, though, was hot and heavy.
Community athletes took the competition floor for the first time early on Friday, and elite individuals closed out their competition in the afternoon.
Elite teams start today, and community members, including individuals, teams, adaptive, masters, and gauntlet athletes, will continue competing into the weekend.
James Sprague, 2024 CrossFit Games champ, made a statement in Miami. The young gun went wire-to-wire, winning “Event 1: Two Rounds Too Many” on Thursday and followed that up with four second-place event finishes.
On the women’s side, Lucy Campbell came into Day 2 with a 16-point lead but dropped to fourth overall by midday. In the final, “Cortadito 2.0,” Campbell and Laura Horvath were close until the end, when Campbell pulled ahead on the last set of ring muscle-ups, taking second in the event and winning overall.
One big number: 400 — During Event 2, “Worth the Weight,” TYR WZA fan-favorite Gui Malheiros hit 400 pounds for a clean + hang clean complex. For reference, Mat Fraser hit 380 for a single squat clean at the 2019 CrossFit Games.

James Sprague Cruises to Victory, Lucy Campbell Tops Horvath for 2025 TYR Wodapalooza Title
OK, James Sprague, we believe you. You’re that fit.
Sprague joined women’s surprise winner Lucy Campbell to become the 2025 TYR Wodapalooza champions in Miami, FL, on Friday.
Remind me: Sprague is the reigning CrossFit Games champion, but considering all that unfolded last summer — Lazar Dukic tragically died during the first event of the competition, and multiple top athletes withdrew from the competition as a result — there has since been a question of whether last year’s Games really counts. And whether Sprague is truly on par with past champions.
But this weekend in Miami, Sprague proved that he truly is that fit. He cruised to victory against a tough field, including three-time TYR WZA champion and five-time Games medalist Pat Vellner and reigning two-time TYR WZA champion Ricky Garard.
Rounding out the top three were Vellner in second and 2024 CrossFit Games rookie Austin Hatfield in third.
On the women’s side, it was Campbell — a 2022 CrossFit Games athlete from the UK who has been out of competition for the last two seasons due to a wrist injury that required multiple surgeries – who managed to oust the 2023 Fittest Woman on Earth and heavy favorite Laura Horvath to take the top spot.
Horvath finished second, five points behind Campbell, and Alexis Raptis finished third.
Sprague and Campbell’s journeys to the title couldn’t have been more different.

2025 TYR Wodapalooza Day 2 Recap: Tight Races and Surprise Winners
Pat Vellner. Ricky Garard. Laura Horvath.
Those were the names we all expected to dominate the 2025 TYR Wodapalooza.
Between the two of them, Vellner and Garard own the last five TYR Wodapalooza titles, while Horvath was coming in as the 2023 Fittest Woman on Earth, 2024 Rogue runner-up, and heavy favorite on the women’s side.
But after two days of competition and six events in Miami Beach, FL, none of those athletes found themselves on top of the podium.
Vellner and Horvath finished second, while Garard ended up fourth overall. James Sprague and Lucy Campbell took the titles.
Day 2 Recap
Event 4: Worth The Weight
For Max Load:
3 attempts – 1 rep-max clean + hang clean
The Women
Both Kyra Milligan and Anikha Greer put up impressive 255-pound lifts in earlier heats, which held up as the top feats of the day.
In the final heat, Horvath and Dani Speegle, who entered the day in fifth and eighth, respectively, both lifted 250 pounds, good enough for a tie for third place in the event.
Horvath’s third-place finish was enough to catapult her from fifth into the top spot, 11 points ahead of Emma Tall in second and 30 points ahead of Alexis Raptis in third.
For Campbell, the leader after Day 1, the event was a damage control test. She finished 36th, dropping her to fourth overall with two events to go.
