🌎 WFP Finals Hit with Withdrawals as Backfill Athletes Step In

POWERED BY

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up.

In today’s edition:

  • 🌎 As the World Fitness Project Finals approach, injuries and withdrawals are reshaping the Pro Division lineup.

  • 🧠 Presence over pressure — you can’t chase every athlete, be the coach they trust to come to when they’re ready.

  • ❤️‍🔥 Mother/daughter pair Janelle and Reese Robinson travel the world, bonding and keeping CrossFit athletes safe as medical team volunteers.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

My one hour at CrossFit is the one hour a day where I’m not thinking about everything…I’m just working on myself, and it makes me feel so much better.

COMPETITIONS

Copenhagen Curveballs – Major Athlete Adjustments Ahead of World Fitness Project Finals

As the World Fitness Project’s first season nears its end in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Pro Division roster continues to change as athletes withdraw and backfills step in.

The busiest season in recent memory started with the CrossFit Open in February (for athletes competing in both the Games season and the WFP season) along with one-off events like Wodapalooza (both Miami and SoCal) and the Rogue Invitational, and is now nearing its end

Exhaustion and injuries are unavoidable in any season, but with more competitions this year, we’ve come to expect more withdrawals from events than usual.

  • Earlier this year, Emma Lawson announced that due to a nagging back injury, she would not be participating in the CrossFit Games season. Alex Gazan suffered an injury from a car accident this summer that kept her from competing at the Games as well. Recently, Dallin Pepper shared that he couldn’t compete at Rogue due to Rhabdomyolysis following the TYR WZA SoCal event.

And now, with the WFP finals approaching (December 18-21 in Copenhagen, Denmark), several Pro Division athletes have withdrawn (with more expected), opening spots for backfill athletes.

The Raised Hand Rule: When to Help a Struggling Athlete (and When to Step Back)

As a coach, you've seen it happen.

  • That athlete who used to be first through the door begins to show up less often. Or the regular who's posting concerning things on social media. Or the member who's clearly going through something but brushes off your "how are you doing?" with a tight smile and a quick "I'm fine."

Caring about your people is probably a big reason why you got into coaching in the first place, but here's a truth we explored on a recent episode of the Chasing Excellence podcast: you cannot save everyone, and trying to will destroy both you and your ability to help anyone at all.

  • 🪵 The return of the log bar muscle-ups.

  • 🧗 The horizontal pegboard.

  • 🪜 The power stairs.

  • 🤺 "The Duel V."

  • 🏋️ A heavy lifting event (TBD).

  • 💪 All the Strongmen and Strongwomen.

  • 😤 The Rogue Legends.

The hands-down winner here (no surprise) was “The Duel V,” with more than a third of total votes.

Meet the Mother-Daughter Duo Who Travel the World as CrossFit Medical Team Volunteers

Credit: @reese.robinsonn / Instagram

For years, Reese Robinson wanted nothing to do with CrossFit.

  • It was her mother, Janelle Robinson’s thing, and the one time Reese agreed to try a class, she felt like she was going to die.

Fast forward to today, and at 20 years old, Reese not only attends CrossFit classes five days a week at CrossFit FirePit in Greensboro, NC, but also volunteers with her mother as part of the medical team at competitions worldwide.

  • This season, they traveled to TYR Wodapalooza in Miami, FL, the Madrid Fitness Festival in Spain, Syndicate Crown in Knoxville, TN, the World Fitness Project’s (WFP) Tour Stop I in Indianapolis, IN, as well as the Masters CrossFit Games in Columbus, OH, the Adaptive CrossFit Games in Las Vegas, NV, and the CrossFit Games in Albany, NY. Next up for them is Wodapalooza again, scheduled for March of next year.
