From CrossFit to HYROX: The ā€œUnbrokenā€ Badge of Honor Gets a New Test

The word ā€œunbrokenā€ has been a part of CrossFit since its early days and has long been regarded as a badge of honor, so to speak.

  • Back in 2010, athletes aimed to do Fran ā€œunbroken,ā€ and today the idea of completing 30 unbroken muscle-ups at the highest level of the sport isn’t uncommon.

And while it’s often not wise to go unbroken in a workout if it means you’re pushing too hard and risk red-lining, sometimes, when the clock is ticking down and you’re emptying the tank on a movement that won’t result in a failed rep, going unbroken is the best option.

But it requires all kinds of mental fortitude to do so.

Now, the ā€œunbrokenā€ concept at the end of a tough workout has entered the HYROX world through the Red Bull 100 Challenge, which asks HYROX participants to complete 100 unbroken wall balls, the final movement, at the end of the race.

  • Continue reading for how the Red Bull 100 is redefining ā€œunbroken.ā€

Stop Tracking Everything: The Data Trap That's Killing Your Gains

Credit: Shutterstock

Your Whoop indicates you're recovered. Your body fat scan shows you're at 14 percent. Your HRV reached a new high last night. You've tracked your macros to the gram, logged every rep, and analyzed every biomarker.

  • So, why aren't you getting the results you want?

Welcome to the data trap – the modern obsession with metrics that's turning athletes into spreadsheet warriors instead of true performers.

In a recent episode of the Chasing Excellence podcast, our friend EC Synkowski joined us to discuss how asking better questions can cut through the noise and focus on what truly moves the needle.

Rise of the AI Trainer: Friend or Foe?

The modern era of fitness differs significantly from the past.

It doesn’t stop at just virtual fitness classes or touchscreen monitors with suggested workout regimens. People are now turning to AI-powered chatbots for nearly everything, including their fitness coaching.

There’s been a rising trend in the fitness industry of people using large language model (LLMs) chatbots to craft their workout plans and act as their own personal motivators.

  • And CrossFit isn’t immune to it either. The sport has adopted the technology sector, with several companies providing ā€œAI-powered CrossFit training.ā€

However, the role of the human trainer cannot be replicated, says New York-based personal trainer and CrossFit coach Patrick Frank.

  • ā€œOne of the problems with this kind of mentality is a lack of specificity to your personal health & fitness needs,ā€ Frank told the Morning Chalk Up in an interview. ā€œI’ve tried it — you can simply ask for a general strength program, or you can feed information about yourself, abilities, goals, etc., but still the results are relatively basic.ā€
