What CrossFit HQ Is Doing for Affiliates: An Interview With Austin Malleolo
For an episode of the Best Hour of Their Day podcast, we recently sat down with Austin Malleolo, Senior Director of Strategy and Operations at CrossFit, to discuss some of HQ’s new initiatives to support affiliates.
From brand protection and improved online presence to real estate partnerships and enhanced communication strategies, we explored how HQ is evolving to address the community's needs.
As an affiliate owner, the entire conversation is worth your time, but here are some of the big takeaways from our conversation about CrossFit’s plans.
Protecting the Brand
One of CrossFit HQ's primary focuses is protecting the brand. Malleolo emphasized that this is a top priority for their legal team, but they need our help to be effective.
IP Theft: HQ is cracking down on unauthorized use of the CrossFit name and associated intellectual property.
Reporting Process: If you suspect IP theft, report it at CrossFit.com with as much detail as possible (screenshots, examples, etc.).
Quick Action: With proper documentation, the legal team can act swiftly to address violations.

Mid-Season Signing – Alec Smith Joins Grid League’s Daytona Beach Venom
You’ve probably seen the videos on Instagram and TikTok of a CrossFit competition where all of a sudden the athletes break out into burpee backflips, back uprises, or a combination of movements like a toe-to-bar into a chest-to-bar into a bar muscle-up.
And you think to yourself, “Wait, this isn’t CrossFit.”
It’s close, it’s Grid League — CrossFit’s cousin.
There is a substantial amount of crossover between the two sports, with many of the Grid League competitors having roots in CrossFit and/or still belonging to a box and training fitness regularly.
One of those crossover athletes is Alec Smith, a four-time Games veteran and 2019 second-place finisher in the Affiliate Cup with CrossFit Krypton.
The Details
Smith came on to the Grid League’s Daytona Beach Venom as a “mid-season signing,” a team member who jumps into competition mid-way through to hopefully take the Venom to the season's final stage.
Smith’s first competition with the team will be this October 11-12 at the Olympia Expo in Las Vegas, NV. With all eight teams in attendance, two matches will take place, and the four teams with the best record will head to playoffs in November in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and then onto the championship.
While this is his first time playing with the Venom, this is not Smith’s first time competing in Grid League.
