Good morning, and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up.
In today’s edition:
“The Crown” teen competition wrapped last week. The Progrm’s John Singleton shares insights on the fourth edition of this elite event.
CrossFit gymnastics coach Pamela Gagnon breaks down one of the sport’s most controversial movements: the butterfly pull-up.
Our new weekly roundup, “As Many Views As Possible,” curates CrossFit and fitness videos — so you can spend less time scrolling and more time foam rolling.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“It’s always so great being able to see another generation coming through. They’re obviously so talented, very young; they bring a fresh perspective as well.” - John Singleton, The Progrm founder, on “The Crown’s” teen competitors.
COMPETITIONS
Teen Champions “Crowned” in Mallorca at The Progrm’s Annual Throwdown
“The Crown,” The Progrm’s highly exclusive annual teen competition, just wrapped up after its fourth run at the Nike Castle in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
A select handful of teen athletes from around the globe threw down. The event has evolved over the years, with the 2025 iteration proving to be unique.
Remind Me
Last fall, we spoke with John Singleton, The Progrm’s founder and event organizer, about the upcoming season.
He shared with us that The Crown is a passion project, and he and his team hope to develop it while ensuring its sustainability.
The event has become a highly sought-after opportunity for elite teen athletes — an invitational competition, a camp, and a core-memory-making experience all rolled into one weekend. Only five boys and five girls are selected to participate. While Singleton and his team strive to deliver a world-class competition, he also aims to create an atmosphere where they can bond, support one another, and build lasting relationships.
Singleton is thankful for the continuous support Nike has provided for the competition each year.
“We have a close relationship with Nike with that event, and we’re looking to expand on that as we move into the next year. They share the same vision regarding the next generation,” Singleton told Morning Chalk Up.

Why Butterfly Pull-Ups?
“Not one pull-up was done.”
This is probably the most common comment on social media posts featuring athletes performing butterfly pull-ups. You might hate them, or maybe you understand them. Regardless of your stance, it’s time to delve deep into the topic.
The History
Identifying the first person to perform a butterfly pull-up is somewhat challenging, as it developed organically within the CrossFit community in the mid to late 2000s. However, we can look back to the O.G. CrossFit legends like Chris Spealler, Brett Marshall, and Greg Amundson, who were likely the pioneers of this skill.
In the early days of competition, athletes were trying to understand the sport. They recognized that speed and efficiency could give them an edge over their competitors.
The pioneers discovered that this fluid arch and hollow pulling motion would meet the standards: chin over the plane of the bar and full lockout at the bottom of the skill, and it would also be faster than a kipping or strict pull-up.

I admit this one is a little bit personal. Since 2005, when I first stumbled into a CrossFit gym, I’ve helped start two equipment companies. Much to my bank account’s chagrin, neither of those companies was called Rogue.
So, needless to say, I’m a bit bitter.
In this video, Coop from Garage Gym Reviews provides plenty of options besides Rogue and Rep gear for outfitting your home gym. He discusses barbells, benches, dumbbells, plates, and more. If you’re the kind of CrossFitter who likes to support the underdog, this one’s for you.

Speaking of underdogs, can someone who has won the CrossFit Games twice be considered one? Mason Startup poses a slightly different question in this video: What’s up with Justin Medeiros? If Mason is correct, the answer is injuries.
In this video, Mason analyzes Justin's lackluster performances since his championship reign, exploring his setbacks, challenges, and some encouraging signs as he heads into 2025.

“It’s always a good day when you can pick up a refrigerator.” With that statement, I became a fan of Nathan King, CF-L3 coach and owner of CrossFit Branson. Join Nate as he works through a 5x3 set of front squats in an otherwise empty gym. (Side note: As someone who often works out solo, it’s comforting to know I’m not alone in talking to myself the whole time.)
Not only is Nate the kind of dude you want to hang out with, but there’s a good chance you’ll learn something about lifting heavy while you do.
