5 CrossFit Games Storylines You Should Pay Attention To

The CrossFit Games is about crowning the Fittest Man and Woman on Earth, and the storylines at the top are always exciting.

This year, we’re all waiting with bated breath to find out if Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr will win by an even bigger margin than she has in the past, or whether Laura Horvath and the rest of the women’s field have closed the gap on the six-time champ.

  • Toomey-Orr’s largest margin of victory was in 2020 when she won by 360 points. In 2022, she won by 113, in 2021, 256, and in 2019, by 195 points.

And on the men’s side, we can’t wait to see how many athletes might wear the leader’s jersey over the course of the weekend, as we expect an epic battle between last year’s champion Jeff Adler, Roman Khrennikov, two-time champion Justin Medeiros and five-time medalist Pat Vellner, any one of whom look like they could win the whole thing.

Amid the excitement at the very top, we sometimes forget there are 79 individual athletes competing, all of whom have a story: a rookie debut story, a comeback story, a redemption story, or some other kind of inspiring story worth following.

Here are five storylines we think are worth following this summer at the 2024 CrossFit Games in Fort Worth, TX.

Is Haley Adams’ Comeback Complete

Last year, four-time CrossFit Games athlete and 2018 teen champion Haley Adams publicly announced she was taking a year off to focus on her mental health.

  • Remind me: In an Instagram post in February 2023, Adams said: “I started CrossFit when I was 14 years old. It has been my everything for a very long time.” Adams went on to admit she battled an eating disorder in the past and has “struggled” with her mental health ever since.

Are You Sabotaging Your Own Gains? The 4 Recovery Mistakes You Might Be Making

I've seen countless athletes push themselves to the limit in pursuit of their fitness goals.

  • But the hard truth is that many unknowingly sabotage their progress by misunderstanding the crucial role of recovery.

Let's dive into the four key misunderstandings that might be holding you back from reaching your full potential.

Misunderstanding #1: It’s Optional

At its core, training is about adaptation. We put our bodies under stress to become stronger, faster, and fitter versions of ourselves.

  • But here's the kicker: Your performance decreases during the actual workout. You're getting weaker, slower, and less capable.

Your body adapts and improves only during the recovery period.

  • This process follows a stress-recovery-adaptation cycle: You start at homeostasis, stress yourself through training, experience decreased performance, then recover and super-compensate to a new, higher baseline of fitness.

Without adequate recovery, you're just stressing yourself repeatedly without reaping the benefits.

Dave Castro Announces Top Training Camp Award at 2024 CrossFit Games

A new performance-based award for the top training camp will be given at the 2024 CrossFit Games, Dave Castro announced in a video on Thursday.

The details: CrossFit’s GM of Sport dropped the news during a video interview with Matt O’Keefe, the Chief Executive Officer of HWPO Training.

  • “At the end of the Games, we’re going to have a top training camp award. It’s going to be given on the floor, but we’re going to keep it underground this year, we’ll have a trophy for it,” said Castro.

  • He adds, the details are still being worked out, but the premise is that the award will be completely performance-based.

The score will be similar to a golf match in terms of scoring points—the lowest number of points wins.

  • The number of athletes per training camp allowed and the minimum number of athletes required to participate are still to be determined.

The CrossFit space has only in recent years started to split into large training camps, or specific programming styles, which community members and elite athletes choose to follow.

Some of the more well-known camps include PRVN Fitness (created by Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr and her husband Shane), Mayhem Athlete (created by Rich Froning), HWPO Training (created by Mat Fraser), and Max El-Hag’s, Training Think Tank.

  • “Honestly, I love it,” said O’Keefe, in response to Castro’s idea. “I’m all in on that.”
