2025 TYR Wodapalooza Day 2 — Lay of the Land

Cool temps and cloudy skies welcomed fans to TYR WZA’s new venue in Miami Beach, FL. The action on the competition floor, though, was hot and heavy, and the first day of the 2025 TYR Wodapalooza competition is officially in the books.

  • The four-day fitness festival enters day two with community divisions starting off their competition weekend as the elite individuals finish off theirs with three more events.

It was a tall person’s game early. The first event, “Two Rounds Too Many,” featured 300 box step-overs (vested in round one), along with bike cals and a run. The second, “Ocean Drive Dang Race,” required athletes to complete three increasingly heavy sled drags across the Reign Total Body Fuel Sandbox. The secret to keeping the sled from burying was to hold the nose up and out of the sand – easier with more height and longer arms.

The competition day closed with a shoulder-heavy, up-and-back-style chipper of handstand walks, wall-facing handstand push-ups, heavy double-unders, and more.

As the dust settled, it was James Sprague and Lucy Campbell on top, with Pat Vellner and Emma Tall in pursuit.

2025 TYR Wodapalooza Day 1 Recap: James Sprague, Lucy Campbell Lead All Competitors

With three events down and three to go at the 2025 TYR Wodapalooza in Miami, FL, there are both familiar faces and a few surprises toward the top of the leaderboard.

The 2024 Fittest Man on Earth, James Sprague, leads the men, while Lucy Campbell sits atop the women’s leaderboard.

Remind me: Campbell placed 16th in her rookie season at the 2022 Games, but a wrist injury that required multiple surgeries kept her out of competition in both 2023 and 2024.

  • She made her return to competition with a win at the 2024 Marbella Championships in Spain last October.

Three-time Wodapalooza champion Pat Vellner sits in second for the men, 27 points behind Sprague. Meanwhile, 2024 Games rookie Harry Lightfoot is 12 points behind Vellner in third. Jonne Koski and Aniol Ekai round out the top five heading into Day 2.

  • Ricky Garard came into the competition looking to win his third consecutive TYR Wodapalooza title, but after a tough third event where he finished 22nd, he currently sits in eighth overall and 31 points away from the podium.

On the women’s side, Sweden’s Emma Tall is in second, 16 points behind Campbell, and Alexis Raptis is 11 points behind Tall in third. Rounding out the top five are 2024 CrossFit Games bronze medalist Emily Rolfe and the heavy favorite heading into the competition, 2023 Games champion Laura Horvath.

15 Years Strong: How the Reebok Nano Transformed the Sport of Fitness

I still remember the first time I walked into a CrossFit gym.

The year was 2008. I was a college rower in London, Ontario, and we heard that CrossFit London had Concept 2 rowing machines.

I felt like a kid in a candy shop when I walked into the 800-square-foot gym and saw a class of six people throwing barbells around and rocking kipping pull-ups, a movement I was familiar with because of my gymnastics background as a kid.

  • The other thing I noticed was their shoes: The room was dominated by Converse All-Stars – “Chucks.”

“What’s going on here,” I thought.

I later learned that, while not ideal, Chucks were most CrossFit enthusiast’s shoe of choice at the time because they had a flatter sole than your typical running shoe or cross-training shoe, which was helpful for weightlifting.

They weren’t great for CrossFit, but they were better than anything else available at the time, when most people had never heard of CrossFit, let alone developed a shoe for it.

Three years into my CrossFit journey, Reebok came to the rescue and launched the first Reebok Nano, which became the official shoe of the 2011 CrossFit Games.

Finally, a shoe specific for CrossFit.

And just like that, the Nano swept in, and by the end of 2011, you couldn’t even call yourself a CrossFit athlete if you didn’t own a pair of Nanos.
