QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I just want to make sure people know that we were trying to do the right thing and it was pure human error. We were not trying to skirt the line because that's just not who we are,” Jason Steinhaus, CrossFit CLT The Grit Haus’s captain, on finding out their team was disqualified due to a rule violation

Grit Haus Team Exits 2024 Season Abruptly After Disqualification

CrossFit CLT The Grit Haus has faced what seems like a series of unfortunate events after an injury ended their 2023 NOBULL CrossFit Games week and now a disqualification for the 2024 CrossFit Games season due to a costly mistake during the Open.

  •  The team out of CrossFit CLT in Charlotte, NC, received a notification from CrossFit HQ stating that they were disqualified from Quarterfinals due to an athlete on their team roster performing an Open workout (and submitting the video as an official submission) at a location other than the affiliate.

One big thing: “CrossFit CLT The Grit Haus” team manager Kevin Steinhaus and the team as a whole own up to the mistake and are disheartened by the situation.

  • The team made it to the Games last year but had to withdraw after Steinhaus injured himself during an event, making this year’s abrupt ending even worse.

The details: Steinhaus has spoken out about the incident in hopes of drawing attention to “human error” and expressing to the community that they intended to follow the rules.

  • Steinhaus tells Morning Chalk Up he received an email from CrossFit HQ earlier in the week asking for clarification on the members on their team roster. One of those members is Josh Hardin, who ended up redoing 24.1 at his workplace – a fire station in Charlotte.

“I got that email on Tuesday that we were ineligible because John Hardin did the workout for 24.1 outside of the affiliate,” said Steinhaus.

  • Hardin did the workout originally at the affiliate, but redid it for personal reasons later. His score was also not used as part of the team score, but CrossFit HQ stood firm on its rule. The team used a score from one of the alternates on their roster.

Rule 1.13 “Team Eligibility,” in the 2024 CrossFit Games Season Rulebook states that to verify an athlete's eligibility, teams must be able to provide video evidence that includes: “Each team member’s performance of their submitted score of all of the Open workouts at their team’s affiliate.”

Separately but also in Rule 1.13: “Each Open workout must be performed in the same physical location as the team’s affiliate.”

☀️🥵 “About the Heat”: The Professional Fitness Athletes’ Association revealed yesterday that in advance of the 2024 Games in Ft. Worth, TX, it sent a request to CrossFit for clarification about preparations for heat during the competition this summer (Click here to read it).

  • From the post: “Many athletes, coaches, and agents have raised questions regarding how the CrossFit Games team will mitigate the impact of the heat index in Fort Worth, TX. In support of all athletes and in partnership with our Advisory Board, we asked CrossFit to provide clarity regarding the duration of time athletes will work at high intensity outdoors. Having this information ensures each athlete can make appropriate arrangements for their health and safety.

  • CrossFit’s response (quoted in the IG post): “Thanks for all the thoughts about what information will help you prepare for Fort Worth. We reviewed your suggestions and can give you a little more information. It is not to the level you are looking for, but we hope it provides enough to help athletes decide how to manage their heat-related training heading into the Games in August.

--The competition will feature 1 primary field of play, indoors in Dickie's arena

--A much smaller percentage of events than Madison will occur outdoors”

The unofficial 2024 Team Quarterfinals leaderboard continues to settle as scoring reviews and adjustments are made. The leaderboard will be set no later than April 15, 2024, according to the CrossFit Games team.

WORKOUT

Jennifer Muir’s Workout of the Week

Today’s workout is programmed by the 2023 Fittest Woman in the UK, JST Compete athlete, and a Built for Athletes ambassador, Jennifer Muir. In the 2023 season, Muir became Scotland’s first-ever Semifinals athlete and took 15th at the Europe Semifinal, missing a trip to Madison by just a few places. She is off to a great start in 2024 season, placing 15th worldwide in the CrossFit Open and has her sights set on Fort Worth this summer.

Jennifer Muir’s Workout

2 rounds for time:

1k run
40 dumbbell thrusters, 2x50/35 pounds, 22.5/15 kg
30 burpees
20 box jumps, 24/20 inches
10 pull-ups

Scaling Options:

Adjust the weight of the dumbbell thruster if you are struggling to complete the reps. If you are not running due to injury or otherwise, substitute 2k on a bike erg or similar fan bike distance.

Advice from Jennifer: “Make sure you keep a steady pace throughout the run and pace yourself through each movement, especially considering the high volume of repetitions involved in some exercises. Assess what kind of rep scheme feels realistic for you to avoid reaching failure prematurely.”
