Can Medeiros Make History in 2024?

In partnership with

Good morning and welcome to the Morning Chalk Up.

In today’s edition:

  • Will any rookie woman break into the top 10 this year? How many men will wear the leader’s jersey in Fort Worth? We predict these and more in part one of our “Buy or Sell” the 2024 CrossFit Games series.

  • Can Justin Medeiros make history this season by being the first non-consecutive, repeat CrossFit Games champ? We talked with Medeiros and his coaches, Adam Neiffer and Jesse Bifano, about it.

  • Since 2009, there has been either a rookie man or woman (or both) in the top 10 at the CrossFit Games every year. Will this be the first year without one?

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“For Justin, consistency is key. It’s not about winning every single event, it’s about accumulating as many points as possible in every single event that makes all the difference in the end.” - Coach Adam Neiffer on his athlete, two-time Fittest Man on Earth, Justin Medeiros

Buying or Selling? Our Writers Predict 2024 CrossFit Games Outcomes, Part 1

The overall picture is starting to take shape for the 2024 CrossFit Games.

We are heading into the oppressive Texas heat (and the comfortably climate-controlled Dickies Arena) to watch athletes once again tackle Dave Castro’s programming.

Sure, we know a couple of events, but everything else is up in the air.

  • So, why not take this opportunity to think big and consider what might happen this season?

We grabbed some of our favorite analysts in the CrossFit space and asked them if they are buying or selling these possible CrossFit Games outcomes.

Buy or Sell – No Rookie Woman Finishes in the Top 10

Scotty Freymond (Writer, Morning Chalk Up) – Buy

In the last three years, three women have accomplished this feat.

  • Mal O’Brien in 2021, and Emma Lawson and Alexis Raptis in 2022.

All three had competed in the teen division before their rookie year, which gave them the experience they needed on the big stage.

Although there are some strong rookies like Grace Walton and Aimee Cringle, there are too many experienced women at the top.

Don’t Call It a Comeback – Justin Medeiros Is Ready for the 2024 CrossFit Games

When you walk into the Shred Shed, Justin Medeiros and Ellie Turner’s home gym and CrossFit Affiliate in Boise, ID, a few things stand out.

  • One is the custom Rogue rig that spans the entire length of the 18-foot ceiling with “Let’s Go!” written on the front, like a call to action.

Your eye is then drawn to the wall, which is emblazoned with words to live by when you are training to be the fittest.

  • “My best is enough.”

  • “Confidence comes through preparation.”

  • And, of course, “It’s a good day,” the newest addition, from strength coach Jesse Bifano.

Medeiros described what these words mean to him in a post on Instagram: “If I focus on the effort and the time I’m putting in…when I cross that finish line, I’ll know that’s the best I had.”

At 25 years old, he is a two-time champion and veteran of the sport. He is entering his fifth straight Games and has been doing CrossFit for half of his life.

Will Any CrossFit Games Rookies Finish in the Top 10 in 2024?

Rookies.

They’re a new name to cheer on. Underestimated talent that, beyond a few days at Semifinals or rumblings from some local or regional competitions, the world hasn’t yet had the chance to watch perform.

Some years, we can anticipate which of these newcomers will make a splash. Other times, it’s not so clear-cut.

The rookies in the 2024 class may have won the teen division or excelled on a team with three to five of their training partners, but we haven’t seen them stand alone on the individual stage yet.

  • The overall performance of the rookie class is always hard to prognosticate.

They’re educated guesses at best.

A teen athlete could destroy their competition against other teens, but they may be lambs fed to hungry wolves when entering the Individual Division for the first time.

A team athlete could be a podium contender with their comrades to help carry the weight while carrying the weight alone could become a different challenge.

The rookies that shine seem to do so against the odds, and it sets them on a hero’s journey for the years to come.

  • No better way to make instant fans for life than coming in looking like David and beating Goliath.
