CROSSFIT GAMES — TEENAGE

2024 Teenage CrossFit Games by Pit Teen Throwdown — Programming Preview

The Teenage CrossFit Games, which will determine the division champions, takes place from August 30 through September 1 in Three Rivers and Kalamazoo, MI.

This is the first year that the “Divisional Games” — the age group and adaptive athletes CrossFit Games — have been held separately from the elite individual and team competition, which was hosted earlier this month in Texas.

For 2024, CrossFit HQ handed the reins over to major competition hosts, which will handle the coordination, programming, and execution of these events. In this case, the Pit Teen Throwdown is hosting the Teenage CrossFit Games.

  • Throughout the competition, teenage athletes in two different age divisions will be tested across seven workouts, released in full last week.

The programming is well-balanced, combining bodyweight movements and gymnastics with strength and monostructural components. Athletes will face barbells, heavy d-balls, dumbbells, sleds, and machines. They’ll also complete a trail run, take on an obstacle course, and max out on Olympic-style lifts.

Let’s take a look at a few of our favorite workouts and dig into some details.

Event 2

For time:

  • 20 alternating d-ball squat cleans (100/70 pounds for 14-15, 150/100 pounds for 16-17)

  • d-ball carry 2 lengths

  • sprint 1 length to finish

Time cap: 9 minutes

Are Sports Nutrition Recommendations for Women Backed by Science?

When it comes to fueling female athletes, you may have heard some very specific advice:

  • Eat 30g of carbs before workouts.

  • Have protein immediately post-workout to maximize muscle-building

  • Get 1g of protein per pound of body weight each day

But are these common recommendations supported by hard evidence?

I explored this topic in a recent episode of the Consistency Project podcast. Let’s examine the research.

The Trouble with “Cutting Edge” Nutrition Advice

As CrossFitters, we’re eager for any edge to improve performance and recovery. This also creates an eager market for hyped-up claims sold as “cutting-edge” science.

“Cutting-edge” information, however, is usually based on mechanisms (like hormone changes) and not outcome evidence (like performance improvements).

It also lacks consensus across multiple research studies.

The result is unreliable nutrition advice, which can:

  1. Promote expensive, unnecessary supplements

  2. Create stress around hitting specific — yet unnecessary — nutrient timing windows

  3. Distract from consistently getting the fundamental nutrition principles right

  4. Erode trust in health/fitness professionals when advice doesn't pan out
