In today’s edition:

  • The Rogue Invitational will kick off this Friday, and we are starting the week with podium picks and dark horses for the men’s division.

  • Electrolyte supplements have risen in popularity recently. Can they help you move the needle in terms of your performance in the gym? EC Synkowski has more, today.

  • Yesterday the 2024 Rogue Invitational programming dropped (well, seven of the nine scheduled events anyway) and it looks incredible. Check out some of the events we can’t wait to see below.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“We both did the qualifiers. It was kind of just a fun thing that we got to do. Our kids were in here. Sometimes it was a little chaotic, but, you know, we figured it out. And really it's just about showing up and doing the best you can.” - Scott Panchik on he and his wife both qualifying for the Legends Championship (in tomorrow’s newsletter!)

2024 Rogue Invitational Podium Picks and Dark Horses: Men’s Division

The men’s field at the 2024 Rogue Invitational brings together the best athletes from the world of CrossFit.

  • At this year’s competition, fans will see eight of the athletes who finished in the top 10 at last year’s Rogue Invitational. And similar to the 2024 CrossFit Games, there is no clear-cut favorite for the event.

Over the last two years, we have seen the Rogue winner determined by a few seconds in the final event, and 2024 could be the same. So, get your popcorn ready because we’re here with our podium picks for this epic showdown.

The Favorites

Looking ahead to the competition in Aberdeen, Scotland, we expect six men to battle for the top spot, including the top five athletes from the 2024 CrossFit Games.

Do You Need Electrolyte Supplements?

Recently, for an episode of the Consistency Project podcast, I got a question from an athlete who runs three to four times a week and does CrossFit, with most of their efforts lasting less than 60 minutes.

She wanted to know if she needed to supplement with electrolytes to support her training.

  • With the rise of brands like LMNT and Liquid I.V., I'm often asked this question.

I wanted to give her the tools to answer the question herself. Here’s what I told her.

Understanding Electrolytes & Performance

Multiple different electrolytes help maintain water balance between various compartments of the body.

  • You can get your electrolytes from food; sodium is the primary electrolyte.

Blood is mostly water and delivers nutrients throughout the body to sustain exercise.

When you sweat, you lose sodium and water, but you lose water faster than sodium.

  • This means the duration and intensity need to reach a certain threshold to accumulate enough sodium loss to necessitate replenishment (maybe at more than 90 minutes of continuous sweating).

3 Events at the 2024 Rogue Invitational We Can’t Wait to See

Every year the Rogue Invitational features some new implements and unique movements that are not only introduced to the athletes competing for the first time but also to the entire CrossFit world.

  • This year is no different and after reading through the programming (released yesterday), there are a few events we are amped to watch.

Here’s a quick look at some of this year’s more interesting events and a few initial takeaways.

Event 3: Braveheart

For time, 8-6-4-2 reps of:

  • wall walk complex

  • back squat, 375/260-pounds

Not just because it references a cinematic masterpiece, but we can’t wait to see what the “wall walk complex” entails.

  • It will most likely include wall-facing handstand pushups, but how many is the question? What else could they mix into the complex to give the athletes a run for their money?

Rogue Invitational programming is unique in a lot of ways, but one specifically is its affinity for back squats.

While it’s uncommon to see this powerlifting staple within a timed event at other competitions, this will be the third year in a row that they have been included at the Invitational.
